"Scribbles" by Theresa Mackiewicz

38 pages; Published by Mascot Books, ©2017

Some kids go to school and do their work, finish their work, and go about the rest of the day without even thinking about it. Some kids go to school and struggle with what seems to be the simplest of assignments. There comes a time when a child can concentrate for so long before they move on to other things; things that are more fun than work that is too complicated and doesn't include the dread the student feels when it's being started.

If your child understands what this is like, then your child may want to get to know Scribbles, the title character who tries hard in Theresa Mackiewicz' book. "Scribbles" follows a little girl named Theresa, but likes her nickname better, as she moves from subject to subject in her school. She always seems to fall behind in her assignments, which frustrates her teachers, and ultimately herself.

Scribbles meets Mrs. Sunshine. Mrs. Sunshine audits Scribbles' classes to see what is being taught and what can be done to help the little girl. Mrs. Sunshine sees that Theresa is not a bad girl. She doesn't disrupt the class or disobey the teacher. She is simply someone who needs a little guidance and a little extra incentive to get her work done and done on time. Theresa is an intelligent girl who needs help when it comes to concentrating and focus. What incentives could Mrs. Sunshine use to help someone who loves to draw?

Mackiewicz takes a children's story and adds something children and their parents can connect with and use to help them. It is filled with the standard troubles that children face every day. In this instance, Little Scribbles is alone facing an uphill academic battle. With the right process, what seems to be a futile attempt at comprehension turns into something fun thanks to the advocate in the form of Mrs. Sunshine. Not only does Mackiewicz' book offer hope to struggling boys and girls everywhere, but it also includes resources and learning strategies families can access to help their own little Scribbles get the help they need to succeed in school.
