Mass Caterer Feeds the Homeless with their Favorite Recipes

Matt Robinson, an author based in Belmont, MA, will be at the Boston Public Market on Thursday, October 23 at 6:00 P.M. Robinson will interview Jeanie Gruber. Gruber is the author of the WISHDISH cookbook and owner of Miss Jeanies Catering and Events Co. and founder of the non-profit WISHDISH Project.

The interview is part of "Cookbook Chats" a series in Robinson's "The Writer's Block" where he interviews local authors about their current and past works. In this latest talk, he showcases Gruber's "WISHDISH Boston". This collection of recipes comes from members of the homeless community Gruber has interviewed.

"By engaging in this dialog and and asking the simple question of, 'what is your favorite food memory dish,' we hoe that we can bring the comfort of home to each of our participants," the WISHDISH website states. "Through this, we celebrate regional culture and heritage, sharing meals and stories that both tug at the heart and fill the soul."

Gruber gets her ideas from a "boots on the ground" approach. She traverses the streets of Boston, engaging homeless in conversations about their favorite recipes that remind them of where they came from. She then cooks the recipe herself and the meal is shared with the community. Each meal is cooked in honor of the person who told her about the recipe. Meals are delivered twice a week to different locations in Boston.

Refreshments will be provided by BPM vendors, and registration for the event is free.

Gruber was a psychotherapist before she began catering small parties in the 1990's. She pivoted to a full-time career in the catering industry, a move she admits she didn't intend, and continues to cater private events through her Massachusetts-based "Miss Jeanie's Catering Company."

Robinson is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He chronicled the lore of UPENN and other Ivy League Schools in his book, "Lions, Tigers, and... Bulldogs?". "The Writer's Block" is nationally syndicated and produced by The Needham Channel. He also provides food-related segments for WBZ Newsradio 1030 and iHeart Radio and teaches writing to prison inmates in Massachusetts.
